Sand Separation Systems
Sand is the ultimate bedding for dairy cows. Sand provides a healthy environment for the udder, it keeps cows cleaner and aids in maximizing overall cow comfort and profitability. When the sand is mixed with the manure, the manure stream becomes abrasive, difficult to agitate, pump and expensive to land apply.
McLanahan Sand-Manure Separation Systems utilize proven sand-processing technology to separate sand from the manure stream. Our systems produce clean, recycled sand that is suitable for reuse within days.

Diluted Manure Streams (Flush or Flush Flume Systems)
In a flush or flush flume system, the flush sand-laden manure stream is diverted to a collection channel where sand settles. A McLanahan Manure Auger conveys the settled sand into the Sand-Manure Separator. Designs can accommodate any flow rate. The McLanahan Self-Cleaning Sand Lane is designed to maximize sand recovery and sand cleanliness in diluted manure streams. The Self-Cleaning Sand Lane functions much like a conventional sand lane in that separation occurs primarily by gravity. The flush flumed manure enters the concrete settling channel. Sand and some manure solids will settle the length of the channel. Unlike conventional sand lanes, the sand is recovered from the settling channel following each flume event or while the flume is operating. The settled material in the channel is conveyed to a central point using a mining-duty auger. From the central collection point, the settled, reclaimed material is conveyed into a Sand Manure Separator using an inclined auger where it is washed free of organic matter and stacked for reuse. With this system, the goal is to reuse the recovered sand rapidly (low inventory) and reclaim in excess of 95%.
Undiluted Manure Systems (Scrape or Vacuum Tank)
Sand-laden manure is collected and conveyed to a processing area. Recycled water for washing sand is supplied from a storage or a closed-separation system. A closed loop scrape system works well for sites with limited water supply and variable recycled water sources from earthen manure storages. The system will maximize overall sand recovery while also producing a stackable manure product for land application.
The sand laden manure is scraped or vac tanked to a central reception tank. An Inclined Auger will convey the scraped undiluted sand-laden manure in to the Sand Manure Separator. Recycled water from the Liquid-Solid Separators will provide the dilution water needed to separate the sand from the manure stream. An ULTRA System can be added to the system to receive the manure effluent from the Sand Manure Separator and remove or bypass fine sand particles. Following the ULTRA System or a settling area, the effluent is pumped into the rotary liquid solid separator to remove up to 35% of the fiber for stacking. Excess sand-free manure effluent will be pumped to a first stage manure storage.
Fine Sand Recovery and Pre Treatment Systems
With the McLanahan ULTRA System, you can recover an additional 5% to 10%, or up to 95% of your sand bedding. The ULTRA Systems can be used as a post sand manure separation solution or as a stand-alone pretreatment solution. The ULTRA System can be sized for various flow rates. A typical ULTRA System will include a pump (rubber vertical sand pump or a dry well pump), Sump (steel or concrete) and a Hydrocyclone.
Recycled Water Handling
Recycled water quality and consistency is important in any sand recovery system. Recycled water for the McLanahan diluted and undiluted system can be supplied from manure storage or a Liquid-Solid Separation System (Closed-Loop Water Handling). Note: Sand manure separator capacity will vary with recycled water quality.
Closed–Loop Water Handling
Separated water for our Liquid Solid Separation System is pumped into the Sand Manure Separator and used to separate sand from manure. These types of systems work continuously with the sand separation system. Separated manure solids for the Liquid Solid Separation System are typically stacked for spreading or hauling but can also be incorporated and pumped with separated liquid to storage or a treatment system.
