How To Change A Screw Shaft In A Horizontal Manure Auger

Warning!

Before performing maintenance on a horizontal manure auger, be sure to read and follow the Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual. Follow the appropriate lockout/tagout/blockout procedures, and read and follow all safety tags. Failure to do so could result in injury or death.

You will need:

  • A wrench and socket set containing the following sizes: 1-1/8” and 3/4”
  • Two securing straps for lifting the screw shaft
  • A forklift or skid-steer
  • Replacement screw shaft

Instructions:

Step 1.

Switch off the power to the horizontal manure auger, and lock the switch in the off position to ensure no power can get to the machine while replacing the bearing. 

Step 2.

Remove the grate cover to the access the screw shaft. 

Step 3.

Secure the screw shaft to a forklift or skid-steer. 

Step 4.

Remove the coupling bolts from both ends of the screw shaft. 

Step 5.

Using the 1-1/8” wrench, unbolt and remove the quick-disconnect caps from both ends of the screw shaft. 

Step 6.

Manually rotate the screw shaft so the gaps left by the quick-disconnect caps are facing down. 

Step 7.

Using the forklift or skid-steer, lift the screw shaft out of the trough and set it down out of the way.

Step 8.

Secure the replacement screw shaft to the forklift or skid-steer and lower the screw shaft into the trough so it rests on the coupling shaft.

Step 9.

Manually rotate the screw shaft so the gaps left by the quick-disconnect caps are easily accessible. 

Step 10.

Replace the quick-disconnect caps and all coupling bolts, torqueing to recommended specifications. 

Step 11.

Remove the securing straps from the screw shaft and forklift or skid-steer. 

Step 12.

Replace the grate cover. 

Step 13.

Remove the lock from the power switch, and restore power to the auger.
