Inclined Manure Augers

Inclined Manure Augers are purpose built screw conveyors designed to transfer abrasive materials like sand-laden manure from tanks to other processing equipment.

The auger’s screw shaft is built with thick, abrasion-resistant flighting for a long life. The liners are made from an abrasion-resistant material as well and bolted in place for ease of maintenance. The double mechanical seal assembly protects the unique lower bearing assembly. These features combine to create an auger that can withstand the severe abuse of 24/7 operation in abrasive environments. McLanahan Inclined Manure Augers are versatile machines that can be supplied in multiple configurations depending on the application.

McLanahan Inclined Manure Augers are primarily used to move and lift sand-laden manure into a sand separation system, but they have been used to convey a variety of other materials, including dairy manure and dewatered manure solids.

How Inclined Manure Augers Work

The McLanahan Inclined Manure Auger is a heavily built screw conveyor for moving abrasive sand-laden manure from tanks into other processing equipment. The lower end of the auger is installed into the bottom of a reception pit. The upper end is anchored to the concrete floor or pedestal. Manure that has been delivered to the reception pit is metered out of the pit using these augers.

The basics of a screw conveyor are fairly simple and consist of several key components. The heart of the conveyor is the screw shaft. The screw shaft is constructed from a length of pipe with flighting attached to the outside. The pipe is supported at each end by a bearing. The upper end also contains the drive system, which causes the screw shaft to rotate. This rotational movement is what transfers material from one end of the conveyor to the other. Changing the rotational speed of a conveyor also changes the discharge rate of the material. As the rotational speed increases, the rate at which the material moves along the conveyor also increases. Variable frequency drives can be used to adjust the speed of a conveyor to precisely control the output of material.

The shaft is contained within a support housing. This housing helps to contain the material that is being conveyed and also provides protection from the shaft. Liners are bolted into the housing under the screw shaft and can be replaced when worn out.

Maintenance is minimal. The lower bearing contains a remote oil reservoir that must be kept full. The upper bearing is greased periodically through the grease line located near the oil reservoir. The reducer requires an annual oil change.

Why McLanahan Inclined Manure Augers

McLanahan Inclined Manure Augers are the only augers in the dairy industry designed specifically to convey sand-laden manure. What this means to the dairy producer is that every component has been specially designed for long wear life and easy maintenance.

The screw shaft is built from heavy wall pipe and contains a flange welded on at each end. This allows for a solid, bolted connection to the lower bearing and flanged gudgeon. The flighting is a thick, abrasion-resistant material welded directly to the pipe and can be replaced when worn out. A bearing supports each end of the shaft. The lower bearing, which is constantly submerged in sand and manure, is protected by a double mechanical seal and lubricated in an oil bath. A pillow block bearing supports the upper end of the shaft and all the thrust loads. The drive uses a torque arm style mount. This allows the gearbox to float with the shaft, minimizing stress on the auger box. Liners are installed under the full length of the screw shaft to protect the auger box from wear. These liners are built from abrasion-resistant material and bolted into place, allowing them to be easily replaced as necessary.

McLahanan Inclined Manure Augers are offered in multiple sizes and lengths to cover a wide range of applications.

Frequently Asked Questions About inclined Manure Augers

Ask An Expert

Some of the other technologies used to transfer sand-laden manure are centrifugal pumps and positive displacement pumps, such as a piston pump or diaphragm pump. This style of pump uses a large ram or diaphragm to pull material into a cavity and then push it out into the discharge. As flow moves through this style of pump, flappers or check valves keep material moving in one direction. These check valves have a tendency to bind up when pumping manure due to the fibers and debris that are common in the manure. With an Inclined Manure Auger, large debris that makes its way into the auger gets conveyed through the system.

Two standard diameters are available. The smaller auger has an 11” outside diameter and is 22' in length, and the larger auger has an 18” outside diameter and can be either 22' or 30' in length.

Inclined Manure Augers are normally used to lift and meter sand or sand-laden manure into a Sand-Manure Separator, which has fixed processing capabilities but can be configured in many different ways to provide the flow that is necessary. The table below shows the flow rates and horsepower for each model.

Model

Power

Flow Rate

11 x 22 5 HP15-150 gpm
18 x 22 10-15 - HP50-1,000 gpm
18 x 30 10-15 HP50-1,000 gpm

McLanahan Inclined Manure Augers feature Twin-Seal Pak lower bearing assemblies provided with special proven seals to prevent sand and manure from entering the bearing cavity. The bearing and seals are both oil lubricated.
