McLanahan Corporation is excited to announce the official launch of the SMS12. This system, similar to others manufactured by McLanahan, separates bedding sand from dairy cow manure. The SMS12 utilizes proven equipment for separating manure and sand, and is supported by a company that is an expert in this type of processing equipment.

The SMS12 is a low-cost, compact sand separation system to support dairy herd sizes of fewer than 700 cows. Rob Plank, Global Product Manager for Agriculture Products, explains that “by reducing the size of some of our equipment and reconfiguring how we lay the equipment out, we’ve reduced the overall system footprint and equipment cost significantly. We’re hopeful this allows dairies with smaller herds to reap the economic benefits of recycling sand.”

The system capitalizes on the closed-loop concept, creating and using its own process water for diluting and separating sand. This system uses the basic principles of sand separation – gravity settling along with centrifugal separation to remove and wash bedding sand and create a reusable bedding product in an economical way. Water and sand and are pumped to the hydrocyclone where it separates the sand and drops it into the sand washer for cleaning. Clean sand discharges from the sand washer onto an optional dewatering screen where a significant portion of the water is removed.

Headquartered in Hollidaysburg, Pa., McLanahan Corporation provides bedding, manure and nutrient management solutions to help dairy producers on five continents improve efficiency, productivity and profitability.
