Metro Mining Partners With McLanahan For Bauxite Hills Expansion Project

Hollidaysburg, Pa., Feb. 29, 2024 – McLanahan Corporation has partnered with Metro Mining for its latest expansion project, supplying a Wobbler Feeder and Cross Belt Sampling System. The expansion of the Bauxite Hills Mine, located in Queensland, Australia, is expected to increase Metro Mining’s throughput to 7 million tons per annum.

Bauxite can be a difficult mineral to process because of its sticky texture when wet. Because of these properties, traditional screening methods are often ineffective. McLanahan recommended a Wobbler Feeder to effectively scalp minus 3.5” (89 mm) material from the feed for direct shipment. McLanahan Wobblers are self-cleaning and can handle wet sticky bauxite, so they are ideally suited to this application.

“Metro’s mined bauxite is typically sticky when moist and wet, presenting operational difficulties in handling and processing in the wetter months of the year. Even in dry months, at its lowest moisture content, the material builds up in transfer chutes that require frequent cleaning. In these conditions, traditional grizzly feeders and vibrating screens are not effective at scalping product,” said Peter Bone, Sales Specialist for McLanahan.

As part of the expansion, Metro engaged McLanahan to also supply a Cross Belt Sampling System. The Cross Belt Sampler will allow Metro Mining to collect samples of the minus 3.5” (89 mm) material for analysis to international standards for sampling aluminum ore. This ensures the quality of the bauxite meets the requirements set forth by Metro’s customers.
